04 Nov Easter Cup
The first race was dominated by Martin & Neil Jones who took the lead by the first windward, they were closely followed by Katie Nurton & Damian Ash. By the end of the first run the top three positions had been decided; Martin Jones took the lead followed by Andy Penman & Nigel Ash in second and Katie Nurton & Damian Ash in third. Martin & Neil Jones also went on to win the second race followed by Damon & Alan Roberts.
Friday evening’s entertainment was the 14 Class dinner, held at Itchenor sailing Club, The fancy dress theme of Pirates, proved to be a winner for a wild night. Charles Duchane promoted himself to head pirate, and made sure the law was enforced amongst the ranks. Those who transgressed were forced to “walk the plank” and show off there disco moves. Saturday dawned earlier for some 14 sailors than others especially for Nigel Ash who managed to miss the morning and both races. This was fortunate as his helm Andrew Penman had suffered minor injuries on the plank and earned the nickname “Peg leg”.
Saturday’s racing got away after a punchy decision to send the fleet out in what appeared to be a drifter, and a good call from the race officer Roddy Bridge who correctly foresaw the wind filling in 2 minutes after the first start. Tom Heywood and Ed Clay took an early lead followed by Charles Duschane and a hard charging Douglas Pattison & Mark Tait. Douglas & Mark took the lead on the second beat and never looked back. Martin & Neil Jones sailed there way up through the fleet into second place overtaking Tom who might have been perhaps a little off colour. In the final race Roger Gilbet showed the form he has demonstrated in plenty of other classes and won the race convincingly. Competition for the next few places was intense. Douglas Pattison & Mark Tait had a stunning final beat to move from 5th to 2nd ahead of Damon Roberts, Tom Heywood and Martin Jones.
