24 Oct Easter Tray 2007
Douglas Pattison and Damien Ash sailed to victory in the hotly contested 6 race Easter Tray meeting hosted by Itchenor Sailing Club. The 20 boat fleet saw wind strengths from an inconsistent and shifting 2 knots in the middle of the course on Friday as a result of competing gradient and sea breeze; to an excellent flat out twin wiring 8-10 knots on Sunday. This first event of the season sees Mike Lennon launch his very sexy looking silver Bieker 5 and the proliferation of 3 father son teams, the newest being Damon Roberts who returns to the fleet in crewed by his son Alan.
Doug and Damien sailed a solid series in difficult conditions but it was their performance in the stronger breeze which saw them at their most impressive. On Sunday morning in perfect conditions they had to battle through the fleet after a thoroughly average start in the first race, going on to demolish the lead built up by James Fawcett and George Nurton, the latter managing to hold onto first place through some very steady tactical sailing. The second race, starting technique back on form, saw Doug and Damien hit the front up the first beat in their 4 year old Morrison 10, never to be challenged again.
