04 Nov POW all done bar the prizegiving!
2 races early today in F5-6 has wrapped up the POW Championships. The first race was an epic 6 lap mission to make up the 2nd part of the Island Commemorative Trophy. In the big breeze there were many reports of awesome white sail reaches and scary gybing antics as the obligatory reaching sections were sailed kiteless.
All the way round, Douglas Pattison/Damian Ash and Andy/Tom Partington were neck and neck in their RMW12’s. Every lap Douglas/Damian stretched away on the top 2 sail reach and before being reeled in as the seaway increased and the boats wrestled to play the waves on the bottom section. Martin/Neale Jones and Ian Pinnell/Ian Mitchell were fighting 3rd and 4th place with equal vigour, occasionally catching Partington, as Partington and Ian Pinnell fought for the Championship Series.
At the finish, the Partington’s passed Damian/Douglas, but needed to bear away hard for the finish, when caught by the conditions they rolled the boat in a windward capsize, forcing Douglas/Damian to take avoiding action, which put them the wrong side of the final leeward mark! While this was happening, the Jones’ continued to pile down the reach, but were just pipped at the finish by the recovered Douglas and Damian, who won their first race of the week.
Ian Pinnell/Ian Mitchell came in third, ahead of the Partington’s, meaning the Championship was wide open – albeit with Andy/Tom Partington needing to win the final race, having just won the Island Commemorative Trophy from the combined points of races 6 and 7.
Llandudno Trophy – Race 8
Down to the wire – Ian Pinnell needed to finish top 3 and not more than one place behind Andy/Tom Partington – in the windiest race conditions of the week. Off the start, on a 4 lap course, all sailed for speed, just out of range of each other, with Ian/Ian tacking slowly, just underneath Andy/Tom, letting the Partington RMW12 sneak just ahead at the top mark. Andy/Tom pushed on in their heavy weather mode, enjoying some challenging 2 sail gybes. The chasing pack diminished, but only after a challenge by Douglas Pattison/Daminan Ash on the second lap. The conditions were such that all slowly admitted to “wearing round” a mark at some point! Ian Pinnell/Ian Mitchell finishing 5th in the heavy weather.
Final places gave Andy & Tom Partington their first POW Championship win on countback in their 4 years sailing together. A close championship, down to the wire and great preparation for the Worlds in 2 weeks.
